The beginnings

A Lifelong Curiosity

At eleven, Erik entered a Chinese Kenpo dojo hoping to learn self-defense. At fourteen, his experience in the dojo sparked his interest in the healing arts. His training expanded to include meditation, meridian traditions, and broader questions about the body. His sifu taught him that knowledge of the body could be used to harm or to help.

His interests remained wide-ranging through college, where he studied subjects including pre-medical sciences, psychology, movement, music, theology, and business. He continued practicing massage and other hands-on approaches along the way.

Two serious motorcycle accidents in his late teens and early twenties made his interest in recovery personal. He researched and tried different approaches, paying attention to what helped and changing direction when something did not. Persistence, curiosity, and the willingness to reconsider an assumption stayed with him.

The path

Choosing a Different Path

Erik pursued a successful career in corporate recruiting while continuing to work with people through massage. Eventually, he recognized that the work he found most fulfilling was the work he had been drawn to since childhood.

His path included a tour with Cirque du Soleil's Dralion, where he provided massage and bodywork to performers and worked as a raw-foods chef. Their unusual physical demands challenged him to adapt his approach. He was equally struck by the dedication and enjoyment the performers brought to their work.

After his time with Cirque, Erik completed his Texas massage therapy licensing and sought additional, more extensive training in Canada. He has continued learning through further study and years of working directly with clients.

Working with people

The Work Today

A client may point to one area of discomfort, but movement or tissue responses may suggest another place worth exploring. Erik draws on myofascial techniques, Active Release Technique, targeted stretching, and other hands-on methods as the session develops.

The aim is to respond thoughtfully to the individual rather than begin with a routine. His years of practice have taught him to stay curious, pay attention to the changes taking place, and adjust when something calls for a different approach.

Bodywork and EFT

Beyond the Physical

Erik's interest in the connection between physical experience, stress, and emotional patterns also informs Attentive Witness, his separate EFT and parts-informed offering.

The services have different focuses, but both grow from the same long-standing curiosity about people and their experiences.
